“We recently had a resident pass away. Mandy had the most outstanding relationship with the resident and her family. That resident constantly asked about Mandy and her family, even towards the end. Mandy made a huge impact on that family. The daughter of this resident told me before leaving for the last time, ‘I would clone that girl if I was you, she is the heart of this building.’ I could not agree more.”

We may not be able to clone Mandy, but we’re thankful to have at least one of her to demonstrate such a powerful heart of caring. Congratulations on the nomination, Mandy, and thank you for all you do!

Fall Risk Assessment: Elderly Falls & How to Prevent Them

Posted by in Mind and Spirit.

Preventing elderly falls is an essential part of home care for assisted living communities and caregivers to the elderly. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in three adults over the age of 65 falls each year and over 2 million people are treated annually in emergency departments for fall-related injuries.

With the right plan, many elderly falls can be prevented at home. Using two-sided carpet tape to secure rugs to the floor, installing bright light bulbs, placing non-slip mats in and around the shower, and keeping clutter in check are all easy ways to prevent elderly falls.

Taking a fall risk assessment can help determine whether a home or assisted living environment mitigates elderly falls. Use this checklist as a guideline:

• Make kitchen items accessible. Organize your kitchen so that frequently used items are easy-to-reach and obtainable. Avoid using a stool with more than two steps to mitigate the risk of elderly falls.

• Clean up the clutter. Make sure there’s a wide, clear path through each room so that people with wheelchairs and walkers can navigate without issues. Pick up objects on the floor and re-route electrical cords to minimize elderly falls and trips.

• Fall-proof the bathroom. Using a rubber mat and shower chairs can help reduce slips and falls in the shower. Adding grab bars or handles can also assist in preventing falls.

• Keep the stairs well-lit. Senior citizens require adequate light in the home to be able to see properly. Install brighter light bulbs where necessary and add extra light switches to both the top and bottom of the stairs.

Completing a fall risk assessment can help lower the risk of elderly falls and make the home a much safer place to be. Elderly fall risk does not have to be a burden for older adults. With careful and diligent preparation, these simple steps can be taken to reduce risks and help keep seniors safe from the danger of falling.

Sherri Hodson
Brookstone Estates of Vandalia

Many of the incredible nominees for our prestigious Heart of Caring award are the individuals who truly embody caring, honesty, appreciation, respect and teamwork in their respective communities. Today’s nominee from Brookstone Estates of Vandalia is no exception.

“Sherri is “heart of caring” at our community. As the only CNA on the floor, Sheri is pulled in many different directions during her shift but she finds time to make the residents laugh and she finds time to talk to them and listen to what they have to say. On her days off, Sherri comes in and collects the recycling to take to the recycling center. She will often run errands for the residents after she gets off work and she never misses a funeral or visitation of one of our residents.”

Sherri’s willingness to go above any beyond doesn’t just extend to taking out the recycling; she’s also been known to come in on her days off to celebrate birthdays, work ahead to help out of the next shift’s team members, pick up a Valentine’s card, and even put on a costume.

“Sherri is fun for the residents. Every Wednesday is HUMP day. She has a camel outfit including a camel head and tail. Every Wednesday at lunch she wears the outfit into the dining room Sherri yells “What day is it?” and the residents yell back “it’s hump day”. Sherri never misses a Wednesday. She has other suites and heads: a turkey for thanksgiving, antlers for Christmas, ears for Easter. The residents love this.”

No matter the costume, Sherri’s heart of caring shines through in all she does to provide best-in-class care to our residents. Thank you, Sherri, for all you do, and congratulations on the nomination!

Alexis Tucker
CNA, Brookstone Estates of Paris

Some of the best parts about the senior housing industry are the connections each team member makes with the residents we have the privilege of caring for. For Alexis Tucker, a CNA at Brookstone Estates of Paris, these connections have become so strong that she simply treats the residents as if they were her own family.

“She shows much [care] with our residents as if they were her own family members.” “She always has a smile when at work which is what the residents need daily, she helps their every need to the best of her ability.”

Alexis’ heart of caring gives her the ability to develop family-like relationships with the residents she cares for, but she’s also been recognized for the positivity and “bubbly personality” with which she cares for residents and staff alike. For one resident in particular, her positivity and heart of caring has truly had a profound impact.

“She has a good relationship with one resident that makes the resident happy; [the resident] always wants to know if this one CNA is here today. This CNA always listens to [the resident’s] stories, gives her advice on her jewelry making, looks at [the jewelry] and tells her how wonderful of a job she is doing. The resident [also] wants to hear how this CNA is doing with her nursing classes she is taking, and much more. This gives that resident something to look forward to everyday, a reason to get up just to see staff and hear about their day also. This is a CNA who is here for her residents not just a pay check. That is what it’s all about!!!”

We couldn’t agree more! Thank you, Alexis, for putting our core values into practice through the way you care for the residents at Brookstone Estates of Paris. Congratulations on the nomination for our Heart of Caring award!
