Seeking the Right Treatment for Arthritis

Posted by in Health and Fitness.

Anyone who experiences arthritis knows it can be quite painful, unpredictable and particularly difficult find the best treatment. With such a painful disease so commonly affecting our residents and families alike, we took some time to look at arthritis and its causes, common forms of treatment for arthritis, and different ways you may be able to find arthritis relief.

Arthritis affects over 50 million adults in the United States, according to the Arthritis Foundation. Despite how common this category of diseases is, many people remain largely unaware of arthritis’ causes. There are actually more than 100 kinds of arthritis, the most common of which is osteoarthritis. Deterioration of cartilage on the ends of bones causes this degenerative form of arthritis, often leading to weakness in joints and pain, swelling, and stiffness over time. The many other types of arthritis fall into three other categories: inflammatory arthritis, infectious arthritis, and metabolic arthritis.

When it comes to treatment for arthritis, there are many different approaches based on the type of arthritis that a patient has. Typical treatments for arthritis aim to reduce joint pain in arthritis sufferers, as this is typically the most straightforward means of arthritis relief. Other means of treatment for arthritis, in cases of rheumatoid or inflammatory arthritis, include various drugs that intervene against your immune system, preventing it from attacking your own inflamed joints. Ultimately, the right individual treatment for arthritis comes down to the type and severity of arthritis of each individual.

Aside from these treatments, in cases of mild and moderate arthritis, self-management of symptoms can be the best way to find arthritis relief. This relief typically comes from finding the right balance between exercise and rest. The right exercise can strengthen your muscles and joints, and activities like yoga can improve your strength and range of motion in the affected joints. Activity that provides arthritis relief must also be balanced with adequate rest, pain management, and sleep to ensure that symptoms of arthritis are not exacerbated by overuse.

If you’re seeking treatment for arthritis, talk to your doctor today to find an effective treatment regimen that suits your needs. In the meantime, stay tuned to the Senior Lifestyle blog for more helpful and healthful information.

In many instances, caring and kindness are obvious; in others, caring comes in the form of quiet perseverance and determination to stand by our core values day-in and day-out. Today’s nominee is an example of that everyday heart of caring we seek in all our team members.

“She embraces all of the core values and it shows in the work she does for the residents. She stays connected to the facility 24/7…she cares about them, listens to them and looks out for them. She is an example for all to follow.”

“She maintains a positive demeanor at all times and encourages others to excel. She offers examples of how to do/say things. She pitches in and helps whenever needed, without being asked.”

Deborah’s can-do attitude persists even during some of the most challenging moments of being a caregiver. She uses her heart of caring to create a safe, comforting environment for each and every resident she cares for.

“We have a resident who just will not shower. Debbie has done everything imaginable…she hosted an after-shower PJ party, she bought the resident new clothes. She tried and tried and tried, never giving up.”

What an example of perseverance and kindness that evidence Deborah’s heart of caring. Congratulations on winning a well-deserved community nomination, Deborah!

Where Will They Be Next?

Once upon a time, when our prestigious Heart of Caring award was first created, Senior Lifestyle’s executive team traveled to each winner’s community to make the announcement in person. This year, our executive team is on the move once again to surprise our winners at their communities as we count down to our Annual Leadership Conference in June.

Jon DeLuca, CEO, and Justin Robins, Senior Vice President of Business Solutions, flew out to CA to surprise our first winner at Fullerton Gardens. Joanne Fanning, Resident Program Assistant, was selected as one of six winners from over 100 nominees across the country for her commitment to serving our residents with Senior Lifestyle’s core values as her foundation.

This executive surprise is our second special twist to our annual Heart of Caring award, the first being our decision to recognize not just our six national winners, but every company winner, during our 100 Days of Heart of Caring series.

As we continue to count down the days until our Annual Leadership Conference, we invite you to stay tuned for the rest of our 100 Days on our social media channels to see where our executives will be next!

Carol Shafer
Reflections

One of the many joys of the Heart of Caring award process is watching team members celebrate their coworkers through the nomination process; in many cases, there are more glowing comments than we can fit in one post. Today’s featured nominee is one such example, so much so that we’ve decided to let her nomination forms speak for themselves:

“Carol Shafer exhibits all of SLC’s Core Values! She is consistently a CHART hero in all she does. Caring: Carol’s genuine interest for our residents is displayed daily by going above and beyond any of her daily duties. She often is seen quickly tying shoes, adjusting clothing or just giving a quick hug to Assisted Living as well as Independent Living residents in the midst of going to perform her next duty. Carol is quick to respond to every request no matter how big or small for the residents at Reflections. Her care for her co-workers is seen every day, as she faithfully goes to each department, door-to-door, just to say good-bye and tell everyone to enjoy the rest of their day. Honesty: in gratitude of her excellent care, families and residents are always trying to “tip” Carol with gift cards. In the few instances when families have left sealed Thank-you cards for Carol, upon opening them and discovering the tip, she marches directly to the office and gives the “tip” to the Executive Director or Business Office Manager to return to families or residents and re-educate on the policy.”

“Appreciation: Every day Carol can be heard affirming co-workers in their duties, as well as acknowledging them on a “job well done.” Often she has come to me directly just to “say you are doing a good job, thank you.” Her heart truly wants every coworker to succeed in their job. Respect: Carol’s respect for others is found in her everyday acts of civility toward others. it’s the continual hello’s, good-bye’s, thank-you’s, opening doors, or the “how is your day” and “let me help you with that.” Carol is mindful of all departments’ responsibilities and is open to any ideas that will ensure quality care of our residents. Teamwork: Carol’s initiative to jump in at any given chance to assist housekeeping, dining, activities, marketing or management is only surpassed by the continuous smile on her face.”

“She is a friend or family to every person she meets. I have seen her cry and comfort both independent and assisted living residents’ families after they have passed. I have seen her display concern and empathy for residents and their families during difficult times. I have seen her sit and assist a resident to put together a model airplane that his daughter sent from out of state for his birthday…If you asked our residents or family members about Carol there would not be one negative comment. They describe Carol as being the most caring person they know, the happiest person they know, the most thankful person they know, and are in awe of her energy and enthusiasm she puts toward enriching the lives of all those that come in contact with her.”

We couldn’t have said it any better. Thank you, Carol, for using your heart of caring to have such a positive impact on the lives of others. Congratulations on the nomination!

Gayla Davis
Timberwood

In order to know when someone’s feeling down or needs encouragement, you have to first build a relationship with them. Today’s 100 Days of Heart of Caring spotlight features a team member from Timberwood who has a knack for getting to know her residents so she can do just that.

“If a resident is not feeling well or simply not feeling like himself or herself, she does all that she can to encourage them and ensure they are comfortable and their needs are always being met in a timely manner, She has been seen sitting with residents and holding their bands just to mend their spirits.”

Gayla doesn’t stop there; those nominating her for the Heart of Caring award recognized how she regularly goes above and beyond her job description to ensure each resident always has exactly what they need.

“Mrs. Davis consistently goes above and beyond her job duties to ensure the best quality of life for the residents at our community. She does so by ensuring all apartments, living areas and public living areas are always cleaning to the highest standards. She never frets about assisting residents in areas outside of her responsibilities, whether it is a maintenance issue, assisting with activities, outings and family nights, or transporting residents to and from doctors appointments. Above those duties, she also takes the times to build relationships with each resident.”

We are so thankful to have team members like Gayla to take care of our residents; they truly are the reason we’re able to provide the care we do. Thank you, Gayla, for your commitment to caring for and serving our residents with such kindness and respect. Congratulations on the nomination!

Rosemary Betts
Garden Estates of Tyler

Today’s Heart of Caring nominee is a night owl who takes every opportunity she can to put her caring heart to work, brightening up the evenings for the residents at Garden Estates of Tyler.

“Each night you see her engaging the residents and there’s never a night without laughter when Rosemary’s there. Although she works a shift that slows down a little bit because it’s in the evening, that doesn’t stop her from keeping the residents engaged. It could be doing puzzles, board games, playing Skip Bo, making up her own games, even just visiting with the residents; they are always having a good time when Rosemary is on duty.”

“Rosemary is a good role model because she shows how to care for residents and staff. She’s not afraid to go over and beyond her job duties to make sure that the resident has what they need. Customer service seems to be one of the hardest things to find today, so this is a big plus for our residents, staff, families and prospects!”

Rosemary’s commitment to impeccable customer service and best-in-class care has allowed her to foster connections with all of the residents she cares for, be it a new resident or one who’s been a part of the family for years.

“Rosemary has a special relationship with many families and residents. They truly care for Rosemary & trust her beyond doubt. One family that comes to mind has been here for eight years now and their mom has declined over the past year. Rosemary has gone over and beyond to comfort his family by visiting the hospital and rehab and on top of that, make sure the resident still stays engaged although she’s not as outgoing as she was before. When Rosemary is on duty, the resident is usually up front having a good time! Rosemary is such an asset to our community; everyone that she comes in contact with I feel she touches their life in some way.”

Rosemary truly is an asset to the Senior Lifestyle family, and we’re honored to have her as part of our team. Congratulations on the nomination!

The foundation of senior housing may be providing healthcare, but one of our core pillars here at Senior Lifestyle is hospitality. We strive to treat everyone who walks through our doors as our family, and today’s Heart of Caring nominee is a perfect example of this mission in action.

“Joan truly cares about our residents and treats them as if they were her own family. Our residents know how much Joan cares about them because they drop by the concierge desk each day to say hi, share their coming and going schedule, and provide an update on their well-being.”

“Joan is our only full-time concierge and is the key point of contact on the weekends. She keeps everyone abreast of any concerns which need to be addressed, and is a true team player for the success of our community. Joan not only greets each individual with a friendly face, but genuinely cares for the residents in any way she can. For one resident, Kim’s effort to build a relationship means all the world.

“She makes a point of knowing family members of our residents by name. One resident in particular does not have family who visits him…He drives a scooter and loves his freedom of coming and going from our community. He always checks in the the concierge when he leaves and returns.
