Gayla Davis
Timberwood

In order to know when someone’s feeling down or needs encouragement, you have to first build a relationship with them. Today’s 100 Days of Heart of Caring spotlight features a team member from Timberwood who has a knack for getting to know her residents so she can do just that.

“If a resident is not feeling well or simply not feeling like himself or herself, she does all that she can to encourage them and ensure they are comfortable and their needs are always being met in a timely manner, She has been seen sitting with residents and holding their bands just to mend their spirits.”

Gayla doesn’t stop there; those nominating her for the Heart of Caring award recognized how she regularly goes above and beyond her job description to ensure each resident always has exactly what they need.

“Mrs. Davis consistently goes above and beyond her job duties to ensure the best quality of life for the residents at our community. She does so by ensuring all apartments, living areas and public living areas are always cleaning to the highest standards. She never frets about assisting residents in areas outside of her responsibilities, whether it is a maintenance issue, assisting with activities, outings and family nights, or transporting residents to and from doctors appointments. Above those duties, she also takes the times to build relationships with each resident.”

We are so thankful to have team members like Gayla to take care of our residents; they truly are the reason we’re able to provide the care we do. Thank you, Gayla, for your commitment to caring for and serving our residents with such kindness and respect. Congratulations on the nomination!

Rosemary Betts
Garden Estates of Tyler

Today’s Heart of Caring nominee is a night owl who takes every opportunity she can to put her caring heart to work, brightening up the evenings for the residents at Garden Estates of Tyler.

“Each night you see her engaging the residents and there’s never a night without laughter when Rosemary’s there. Although she works a shift that slows down a little bit because it’s in the evening, that doesn’t stop her from keeping the residents engaged. It could be doing puzzles, board games, playing Skip Bo, making up her own games, even just visiting with the residents; they are always having a good time when Rosemary is on duty.”

“Rosemary is a good role model because she shows how to care for residents and staff. She’s not afraid to go over and beyond her job duties to make sure that the resident has what they need. Customer service seems to be one of the hardest things to find today, so this is a big plus for our residents, staff, families and prospects!”

Rosemary’s commitment to impeccable customer service and best-in-class care has allowed her to foster connections with all of the residents she cares for, be it a new resident or one who’s been a part of the family for years.

“Rosemary has a special relationship with many families and residents. They truly care for Rosemary & trust her beyond doubt. One family that comes to mind has been here for eight years now and their mom has declined over the past year. Rosemary has gone over and beyond to comfort his family by visiting the hospital and rehab and on top of that, make sure the resident still stays engaged although she’s not as outgoing as she was before. When Rosemary is on duty, the resident is usually up front having a good time! Rosemary is such an asset to our community; everyone that she comes in contact with I feel she touches their life in some way.”

Rosemary truly is an asset to the Senior Lifestyle family, and we’re honored to have her as part of our team. Congratulations on the nomination!

The foundation of senior housing may be providing healthcare, but one of our core pillars here at Senior Lifestyle is hospitality. We strive to treat everyone who walks through our doors as our family, and today’s Heart of Caring nominee is a perfect example of this mission in action.

“Joan truly cares about our residents and treats them as if they were her own family. Our residents know how much Joan cares about them because they drop by the concierge desk each day to say hi, share their coming and going schedule, and provide an update on their well-being.”

She keeps everyone abreast of any concerns which need to be addressed, and is a true team player for the success of our community. Kim Yates
Cottage Landing

Sometimes it doesn’t take much to make someone’s day brighter. Today’s 100 Days of Heart of Caring feature recognizes a team member from Cottage Landing who gives her heart (of caring!) to make her residents’ days better.

“She is always making each resident feel important in their own way. She always puts the resident first, and never says no. Her answer is always ‘I am on my way!'”

“Kim embraces all values on a daily basis, whether stopping her work to pull up a resident’s socks, jumping in to help other staff members, or even help in the kitchen. Kim always does her job with a smile, and she has the attitude and work ethic that sets a great example for the other staff members.”

The day-in, day-out service Kim provides a perfect glance into the heart of caring she brings to the Cottage Landing team. Her willingness to go above and beyond is appreciated by all, but especially by a few residents who look to Kim for care and kindness.

Edgar Cruz-Acosta
The Addison of Pleasant Prairie

You may have heard of being in two places at once, but today’s Heart of Caring nominee is a member of our dining team who truly went above and beyond during a period of time where his community needed someone to be two places at once.

“Since he began working for The Addison, Edgar has gone above and beyond in more ways than one. For the past couple of months, Edgar has been working at two SL communities. He has been helping to fill in shifts ate the SL community he left to come to the Addison so that they were not left short-handed, meanwhile learning the ropes and helping the team at The Addison.”

Having just recently celebrated its official ribbon-cutting ceremony, The Addison is a brand new Senior Lifestyle community specializing in assisted living and memory care. The Addison team has spent the past few months working hard to build relationships with the locale community, a process Edgar eagerly jumped into.

“Another way he stood out recently in the area of teamwork was his willingness to drive an hour away to prepare our Chocolate Wednesday treats in the kitchen of the community he used to work for because the kitchen at The Addison was not yet in working order. There were times he would work during the day at The Addison and then work late into the evening making the chocolate treats for The Addison over at the other community. Then he would drive [the treats] to the welcome center early the next morning to deliver the treats and help the sales and marketing team package them up for delivery. He even accompanied the sales team on the first week of Chocolate Wednesday outreach visits so they could meet the person who created the delicious chocolate treats! We are very pleased to have Edgar on tour team. Thank you Edgar!”

We couldn’t agree more. Thank you for all you do, Edgar, especially during the opening phases of The Addison. We’re honored to have you as part of our Senior Lifestyle family!

Pamela Campbell
Walden Place

The journey through Alzheimer’s and other dementias can be one of the hardest for a family to walk through, especially during the transition from living at home to living in a community setting. It’s in these moments that team members with hearts of caring like today’s nominee become not just important, but vital to making our residents and families feel at home.

“Pamela works the overnight shift and while her contact time with our residents may be limited, she still enriches our residents’ lives every day. She always has a calm, patient approach with the residents and has endeared herself to many of them. When working on Memory Care, Pam truly understands the value of knowing each resident’s life story. She has a knack for validating the residents’ emotions and their perceived realities. She anticipates the residents’ needs and is often able to meet those needs before residents become upset or agitated. She will take the time to sit and chat with the residents and try to discover what is troubling them.”

Overnight or during the day, Pamela’s interactions with residents evidence a true heart of caring at work in all she does. For one resident in particular, her kindness and caring continues to make a difference in his daily life.

“We had a resident on Memory Care who would be up at night looking to find his vehicle and leave. Pamela was always able to ease his anxieties and help him back to a steady state. When he would be up, she would make him some decaf coffee and sit with him and talk about his life. She would always validate his feelings and “meet him where he was.” When he would talk to her as if they had known each other for years and that she knew everyone he knew, she would not correct him, but agree and laugh along to the memories as if they were her own. She made this gentleman feel safe and secure while maintaining his dignity. Pamela truly has a “Heart of Caring.””

Thank you, Pamela, for living out the core values that make up Senior Lifestyle. Congratulations on a well-deserved community nomination!
