Fun Things for Seniors to Do in Lake Placid, FL

Lake Placid, FL, is a small town in central Florida that’s made a big splash throughout the country. Reader’s Digest named Florida’s Lake Placid as “America’s Most Interesting Town,” due to its diverse abundance of art, nature, history and culture.

Lake Placid is also known as the Caladium Capital of the World. Wondering what a caladium is? Caladiums are a flower plant that resemble poinsettias. According to the town’s website, 98% of the world’s caladium bulbs come from Lake Placid.

The town’s also home to a clown college and museum, nearly 30 freshwater lakes and nearly 50 outdoor murals. There’s lots to explore around this charming town, including the following destinations and attractions.

  • Henscratch Farms Vineyard & Winery: Henscratch Farms Vineyard & Winery is a beautiful place to visit to sample the winery’s wines and purchase homemade goods like jams, ciders, salsas, dressings, sauces and jellies. You can also see and feed animals, like the koi fish and the 200 free-range chickens and the ducks wandering around the farm. In August, the farm hosts an annual grape stomp that visitors can participate in or watch.
  • Lake Placid Farmers Market: Speaking of locally grown produce and goods, the Lake Placid Farmers Market on Main Street is open every Saturday from mid-October through April. Visitors can listen to live local music, buy farm-fresh food and shop handmade goods crafted by local artisans.
  • Murals around Lake Placid: With nearly 50 murals to see around town, stop by the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce to pick up a murals guide. At the chamber building, you can view the Mural Gallery, which shows original renderings of all the murals, as well as a nine-minute film that explains how the murals were selected and are maintained. With the guide, you can move around town to see murals on older buildings and get a taste of local history in the artwork.
  • Freshwater lakes: There are 29 named freshwater lakes in the Lake Placid area, which cover 11,000 acres of surface water. Lake Istokpoga, one of Florida’s top five largest lakes, is also found in Lake Placid. The lakes are popular spots for fishing and for bird watching, as they’re home to bald eagles, osprey and other wildlife. Visitors also enjoy swimming, boating and riding jet skis on the many lakes in the area.
  • Toby’s Clown Foundation and School: Toby’s Clown Foundation and School is home to clown classes, plus a museum and gift shop that’s open to visitors. The site has more than 700 pieces of clown memorabilia, a clowning video people can watch and experts on hand to provide education on how items like the clown clothes, figurines, art prints and posters were acquired. There are also weekend-long clown training classes available, with hundreds of clowns having graduated since the school’s debut in 1993.

Lake Placid, FL, is home to lots of other sites and attractions, including the Veterans Memorial honoring veterans, the Sugar Sand Distillery featuring handcrafted spirits, the Caladium Arts and Crafts Cooperative and Wet Dogs Brewing.
