Executive Bio for The Breakers at Edgewater Beach
Meet Our Executive Director
As the Executive Director of The Breakers, Ted O’Brien, brings an enthusiastic and energetic approach to his leadership of this dynamic community. Since Ted started his family by proposing to his wife on the beach just steps from The Breakers location, he considers The Breakers his home.
Ted has spent nearly 20 years of his career dedicated towards the lives of seniors. Ted joined the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman serving in Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Provide Comfort while stationed with 2nd Marine Division based out of Camp Lejeune, NC. During this time, Ted started and finished his Bachelors’ degree in Health Care Administration. After serving our country, Ted was compelled to continue serving and decided to dedicate a career towards serving our greatest asset, our seniors. Working for Sunrise Assisted Living as a Director of Communications and later as a Regional Director of Marketing, Ted quickly learned that more options of care were better for those that will likely need services in the future. Ted left the industry for a few years to focus on technology and lead the charge on a software that measured the success of ad buys for Dell computers in early 2000. He also worked on workflow solutions for LaSalle Bank’s wealth management group. Realizing technology took him away from his real passion; Ted made the decision to return to senior care but as an operator where he felt he could affect changes needed for seniors to have better and a much better quality of life.
Ted obtained his LNHA (licensed nursing home administrator) license in 2004 and has never regretted his decision to make this career decision. Working as a regional director for a group that owned and operated 5 supportive living communities in Illinois allowed made Ted realize how many seniors needed more than just tasked based care which was prevalent in the industry. Not long after, Ted made the move with his family to Colorado as Chief Operating Officer for Azura Living. Ted managed all operations of 14 memory care assisted living communities, a 108 bed transitional care facility and a skilled home health agency based out of Lakewood Colorado. As the company was growing, the partners decided to sell over 2/3rds and Ted decided to return back to Chicago still advocating for seniors working with a local Chicago based skilled nursing home group as a regional director and chief compliance officer. Ted has thoroughly enjoyed being at The Breakers since August of 2016. He continues his innovative approach to care, and through these improvements enhances the everyday experiences of the residents and their families.

Testimonials for The Breakers at Edgewater Beach
We can talk all day about how great our communities are, but we think you should hear from people who have experienced first-hand how we offer an unmatched quality of life at every senior living community.
My mother is doing very well here, I’am pleased. This is a nice community with friendly people. They do a good job with the cleanliness, her room and the facility is well maintained. The staff is great, they are very helpful and attentive. She has made some new friends at dinner. The meals are nice, she is pleased with the food. Everything has worked out well for us here.
My mom really enjoys the community and it has been a great experience so far. I really liked the layout of the community with shorter hallways to get to the rooms and elevator. Scott the admissions director was really great and knowledgeable. The move in coordinator made it very easy for my mom’s transition into the community. They got her involved with the activities and other residents.
“I’ve been visiting for over eight months, going over various concerns of my ninety year old mother. We have dinner or lunch each time and are always pleased. The food is delicious. Everything is homemade! I finally moved my very antisocial mother in recently. I rarely hear from her. When I call she tells me she’s “too busy with her new friends now to talk” and will call me back later! I have to hunt her down! The staff is great. Everyone is kind, patient, and willing to help. I finally have peace of mind that my mother is in a safe and caring place. Also, her view from her apartment overlooking the park, beach, and Lake Shore Drive is spectacular!”
“My mother has lived at The Breakers for almost 5 years, and really loves it. She moved from Florida and has made several wonderful friends. The staff is fantastic — very warm and caring and willing to help whenever needed. The Breakers has everything you can imagine — even a movie theater and a swimming pool. The location is excellent and has a private park and sundeck. She can take the 147 and be downtown in a few minutes, but she does take the Breakers shuttle also. She even learned how to use a computer! She never wanted to learn but one of her friends took a computer class at The Breakers and talked her into it. She now has an email address and loves getting photographs from her grandchildren. We really can’t say enough about the place. It has made all the difference in her quality of life. If she was still living in her own place she would not be as social. Now I don’t have to worry about her. We are so happy to have found this place!” – A Google User
“We visited the The Breakers at Edgewater Beach assisted living facility while searching for a place for our aunt to live in the area. The outside area was very nicely maintained. The foyer was fresh and bright with a very nice decor and furniture. The grounds outside offered easy access for residents, where they can enjoy walking around freely safely each day. We could see that there was also plenty of space to have cookouts, parties and picnics. Communal activity rooms were spacious, with comfortable furniture. The seniors can easily socialize, make crafts, play games, watch TV and films and participate in many other stimulating activities. All of the indoor rooms had plenty of fresh air and light. Each room was beautifully decorated and furnished. The colors throughout the building were soothing and comfortable. The private rooms featured plenty of space in nicely decorated surroundings in a variety of floor plans. All had a great deal of natural light and fresh air with very comfortable furniture. They also offer guest suites for visitors. Seniors can use the exercise room at any time and also go on daily walks. Aerobics and yoga classes are offered, and they also have DVDs available. They also have a convenient salon. The facility can accommodate all levels of ambulation. The residents go on trips to visit the many Chicago museums and art galleries, eat at casual and fine restaurants and enjoy the many other cultural events offered, such as festivals, fairs and music venues. The dining room was quite nice, with plenty of space. The food we saw looked and smelled delicious. The menus all had healthy food options for all kinds of diets. Healthy snacks are offered all day and into the evening, as well as whenever residents request them. The residents here looked very content in their living environment and were well cared for by kind, considerate and attentive staff.” – commercesd
“My mom likes the amenities and activities available. It seems well thought out and very organized. The gardening and art room are things she would really enjoy.” – apfm_family
“I like the location and the friendly atmosphere of The Breakers of Edgewater Beach. The place is very clean and very well kept. The staff talked to me about their swimming, exercise, and Yoga classes. I think they have everything pretty well covered. There wasn’t anything that would need to be cleaned up or upgraded. The apartments were very good as well as the staff. I also like that it’s close to the lake.” – Gerry5
“My dad loves it! I would give them a 5 for just about everything! I can’t think of anything they should change. My dad is so happy there. He’s made friends so fast and he’s actually ran into someone he worked with 50 years ago. He mentioned he was taking a couple of classes. One is similar to tai chi. He goes to movies and other things – he’s having a great time! He loves the food! He might actually put on some weight which is good. He was not eating right when he was living on his own. The people there are all really really nice. I can’t think of one bad thing to say! Before, my dad wasn’t eating well and he was lonely. Now he’s making new friends and participating in activities. He likes that fact that he can literally walk out the door to the bus and there are a bunch of things in walking distance. The Breakers also has their own bus for tips and shopping and things like that.” – Happy Daughter
“I loved everything I saw, including the splendid view of Lake Shore and downtown from the apartment I’ve chosen. The amenities are great! I know I can be happy there.”
“A wonderful building. I like everything about it!”
“My mom likes the amenities and activities available. It seems well thought out and very organized. The gardening and art room are things she would really enjoy.”
“I toured the Breakers with a client who wanted to be close to his family and doctors. This assisted living community was near several of his doctors and a great medical facility. It is also near several very good restaurants and shopping. Overall, I would rate this aboce average. The building and units were well maintained and clean. There was nicely furnished common areas. The amenities include scheduled activities in the activity room and also in the community, although I would have liked to see more on the schedule. The dining area was nice and had a fair selection of choices. My client chose another community, but I would give this 4 stars.” – Caring88121
“I chose the Breakers at Edgewater Beach because it’s a fairly large community and it is in the city of Chicago, which was important to me. It’s a high rise and I wanted to live in that kind of setting. The people I spoke to were very nice and, of course, it was just within my price range. My apartment is fairly small and simple. It’s got one very small, but adequate bedroom, and a very tiny, but usable enough kitchen. I could go in there and cook a meal if I chose to. The bathroom is quite nice, large, and it’s going to have a walk-in shower, which is important to me because I can’t use a bathtub. The living room is long, a little narrow, but again it’s got huge windows with a view of the lake and downtown. The food is excellent. I haven’t moved in yet, but I think it will be terrific and I am going to like it there.”
